EASTHAM – State police Trooper Matthew Covino was in the right place at the right time Wednesday, although Sean Pitta may not agree.

Pitta, 41, of Wellfleet was charged with five counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly rammed his car into another vehicle on Route 6 near the intersection with Brackett Road at 2:32 p.m. Wednesday. Pitta then allegedly walked over to the other vehicle, smashed the driver’s side window, grabbed a purse and fled in his own vehicle.

Covino witnessed both Pitta’s ramming the other vehicle as well as his leaving the scene, and the trooper followed and arrested him, according to an Eastham police press release.

Pitta was released on $540 bail. There were five motorists in the other vehicle, drawing the five assault counts. Pitta was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (glass) for breaking the car window, and unarmed robbery.
